Omaha PokerAs the game of poker continues to grow in popularity throughout the world, its multiple variations are also becoming more and more popular with poker players. One of those popular variations of poker is known as Omaha Poker. Omaha Poker is also referred to as Omaha Hi and is incredibly similar to Texas Hold’em but there are two main differences between the two types of games of poker. Those two differences are: 1. In Omaha, instead of receiving only two hole cards, each player receives four. 2. In Omaha, players must use exactly two of their hole cards in combination with three community cards to make their five-card poker hand. The dealer of Omaha, like Texas Hold’em, can be a player of the game. If the dealer is a player the dealer must wear a button that defines them as the dealer of the hand. When dealing cards the dealer will move clockwise and will be passed at the end of every hand. Prior to the dealer dealing cards to the players all bets, including antes and blind bets, must be placed into the pot by every player involved in the game. In the game of Omaha the following takes place: 1. The player directly to the left of the dealer posts the small blind. 2. The player two spots to the left of the dealer posts the big blind. 3. Generally, the small blind is half the size of the big blind. Once all of the required bets have been placed the dealer will then deal four hole cards to each player of the game of Omaha but they must be dealt face down. The player to the left of the big blind begins the round of betting that ensues and is known as the person under the gun. Once betting in round one is complete all players will be able to view and to use three community cards that are dealt face up. Another round of betting will occur and it will begin with the small blind. This round is known as Third Street or a flop. All players will then be able to see and use one more community card that is dealt face up by the dealer in the game. The small blind player in the game will begin another round of betting and this is known as the turn or Fourth Street. A final community card is dealt by the dealer face up for all players to use and view prior to another round of betting taking place. This round is known as the river or Fifth Street. This round of betting is also started by the person with the small blind. As soon as all of the betting is complete all players remaining in the game must show their hands to the rest of the players. The player with the highest hand of five cards wins the pot. Omaha 8 or Omaha Hi-Lo is structurally the same game as Omaha but there is one main difference. The one main difference in this version of poker is that players can play to either obtain the best high hand or the best low hand. |
