Professional poker great Daniel Negreanu was born 26 July, 1974 in Toronto, Canada. His parents, Constantin and Annie, arrived in Canada in 1967 from Romania. Daniel’s parents encouraged both of their sons to follow their dreams. As a teen, Daniel first wanted to become a professional pool player before deciding poker was a better choice.
Daniel Negreanu was just one credit short from finishing high school when he dropped out to chase his dreams of playing professional poker. Like many of the other top poker players, Daniel lost a lot of his money playing in Las Vegas before gaining the skills to start winning some. It didn’t take him that long as he started playing poker professionally at just 21 years old. He won two events at the Foxwoods Casino where he collected more than $130,000 as well as the All Round Player of the Year title. Daniel was just 23 when he played and won his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) event.
In 1998, Negreanu set a record as he was the youngest player to win a WSOP bracelet in the Pot Limit Texas Hold’em $2,000 event. He soon won two more bracelets – one in 2003 and one in 2004. Daniel Negreanu had a big year playing professional poker in 2004. He had the best starting hand in Texas Hold’em and won the Borgata Poker Open. He also won the 2004 Five Diamond World Poker Classic and the Toyota Player of the Year Award in WSOP. Negreanu placed in five WSOP events in 2004.
The Wynn Las Vegas Resort Casino had Daniel Negreanu serve as their Poker Ambassador. He was hired to play $500,000 heads up poker challenges. Daniel has tutored celebrity poker players such as actor Tobey McGuire. Negreanu has also published several books and developed training videos. He is also noted for his columns in CardPlayer magazine and appearances on Canadian and American television. Negreanu is known for his accurate ability to size up opponents while also being quite light-hearted and talkative as he plays poker.
In 2005, Daniel Negreanu married Lori Lin Weber. In 2006, he placed second in both the Tournament of Champions and the World Poker Open. Daniel joined the website team PokerStars in 2007 with the name Kid Poker. His tournament winnings alone by 2008 are more than 10 million dollars. In the span of 19 April to 25 June, 2008 he placed well in many poker events including a first place win of $204,868 in the 39th WSOP. Besides poker, Negreanu also enjoys golf, hockey and comedy.
